Introduction – EMPR 240

Hello All,

My name is Alaina Lewis and I am a second year Sociology student at Queen’s University and am also taking courses to receive my Employment Relations Certificate. I have loved all the jobs that I have had, however my favourite job has been coaching house league volleyball. This job was very hands on, and allowed me the experience to teach younger students something that I love. Looking at the course outline made me especially excited to learn about week three’s topic; Combatting Inequality & Unfairness: Wage Regulation in Canada. I am interested in this topic, and am also looking forward to learning about the other topics that are discussed in the course. I look forward to getting to know you all through your blog posts!

  1. Hey Alaina,
I am a sociology student as well and am also getting my certificate in employment relations! This will be my 5th EMPR course so if you have any questions, I would be happy to help! I am very excited for this course too because I believe it will provide us with a lot of knowledge that we can apply to our lives no matter what line of work we get into. It sets us up to be employees who are well informed about our rights, and all the policies that may be applied to us in the future. Ive never been a volleyball coach but I have been a summer camp counsellor and i’m sure there are a couple similarities with both those jobs! I look forward to interacting with you more this semester as it seems we have a lot in common!

  2. Hi Alaina thanks for sharing! I used to coach some hockey and soccer as well and feel the same way, as my dad did for me I tough younger kids about the sports I love, and also had the opportunity to coach my little cousin for a year. This is my second EMPR class and I can attest to that it has already come in handy at my part time job at Starbucks. Combatting Inequality and unfairness: wage regulation in Canada is also a topic I am looking forward to learning about as I have already been a part of some unfair wage incidences. Do you think that doing both Employment relations and Sociology go hand in hand? Curious to here what you have to say in the coming weeks!

    Thanks
    James
